DragonSword: Awakening Beginner Guide

A spoiler-light first-hours route for understanding Orbis, building one dependable party and making the Signal system click.

Start here

Play it as a team action RPG

The fastest way to struggle is to treat DragonSword like a one-character brawler. Its combat is designed around three heroes creating and answering conditions for one another.

DragonSword: Awakening follows Lute, a young traveler pulled into mercenary life alongside Johnny and the Elf Castella. The opening introduces real-time action, but the deeper layer is the relationship between Status Ailments, Active Skills, Signal Skills and hero switching.

Official launch model: the Steam release is a premium game, not a character gacha. All 19 playable heroes are obtainable through quests or the in-game Nameless Souls route.

First-hours route

A safe order for your opening session

Checkpoint 01

Finish every combat tutorial

Do not rush through the prompts for Active Skills, Signal Skills and switching. These systems are the foundation of later encounters.

Checkpoint 02

Build one complete handoff

Choose a hero who can apply a condition and a teammate whose Signal Skill can answer it. Practice that single sequence until it is automatic.

Checkpoint 03

Commit resources to one trio

Equip and improve a functioning three-hero team before spreading materials across every new unlock.

Checkpoint 04

Explore around the current objective

Check nearby cellars, caves, resident requests and cooking materials while staying close to the story route.

Checkpoint 05

Review the next weak link

If a fight times out, improve damage and combo uptime. If you are knocked out early, work on spacing, defense and safer rotations.

Core combat

Apply → extend → answer → switch

Each hero has distinct Status Ailment abilities. Active Skills build or exploit those states, and Signal Skills provide the dramatic payoff. Switching Signals allow the next hero to enter without breaking the flow.

1 / Apply

Create a usable state

Basic attacks and Active Skills start the setup. Your goal is not merely to deal damage—it is to create a state a teammate recognizes.

2 / Extend

Keep the target in your rhythm

Continue only while you can still see the enemy. A short pause is better than being trapped in an animation during a counterattack.

3 / Answer

Use the Signal window

When the correct prompt appears, trigger the compatible Signal Skill for control, damage or the next transition.

4 / Switch

Carry momentum forward

Bring in the next hero with a purpose. If no useful follow-up is ready, reposition instead of forcing a weak tag.

!

Do not trust launch-week status tables blindly. Multiple third-party sites currently disagree on the total number and exact behavior of ailments. Use the in-game hero screen as the authority for your current version.

Party building

Give every slot a job

A simple party framework is more reliable than a launch-week tier list. Start with three jobs, then replace heroes while preserving the chain.

Slot A

Opener

Applies a dependable Status Ailment and can begin safely against a fresh enemy.

Slot B

Payoff

Answers the opener with a strong Signal Skill or converts control into burst damage.

Slot C

Bridge

Extends the sequence, covers groups or gives you a safer reset when the first plan fails.

Upgrade rule

One trio first

Keep the active team healthy before investing deeply in situational heroes you are not yet using.

Open world

Look above, below and behind the objective

Official materials call out meadows, secret cellars beneath watchtowers, treasure-filled deep seas, hidden caves and dungeons. Exploration also supports Cooking, resident requests and Familiars.

  • Check structures for entrances below ground rather than only circling them.
  • Collect ingredients on the route instead of scheduling a separate farming trip too early.
  • Complete nearby resident requests when they overlap with your current destination.
  • Revisit suspicious paths after the story adds new movement or activity access.
  • Use Familiars for utility and personal preference; cosmetic DLC is not required for the core story.

Avoid these

Five common beginner mistakes

Staying on one hero

You lose the combat system's strongest advantage: Signal handoffs between party members.

Spending every cooldown

Saving one movement or control option makes enemy retaliation much easier to survive.

Upgrading everyone

A thinly spread roster can leave your actual story team underpowered.

Chasing unverified tier lists

Synergy, current gear and the activity matter more than a letter grade published during launch week.

Installing on an HDD

Hound13 explicitly warns that an SSD is required for the intended loading and streaming experience.
